About Haywire Technology

What is “Haywire Technology”, and why the name?

To answer this question, we’ll need to rewind back to the summer of 2014. I just got hired on as an intern at a well-known electric corporation. During my time here, I did all sorts of odd jobs – whether it was learning how to program in C# or Visual Basic, using Darren’s Boot and Nuke to wipe old hard drives, or doing grunt work tasks such as running 80,000+ feet of CAT 6A cable and fiber, I received an immense amount of knowledge from several aspects of IT.

Cool story bro, but that still doesn’t answer why your site is called “Haywire Technology”

I know I know… I’m slow to get to the punchline here. But stick with me!

So during my time at this electric corp, I was involved in running cable to the new building/addition to the company. If I wasn’t running cable, I was running errands and retrieving supplies for the workers. One errand in particular was a tool that would assist in stretching wire, so that less was actually required to cover more….. let’s say…. surface area. Following me now? Lo and behold, I aim to please! So I race down several flights of stairs and search through a work van full of tools. However, I couldn’t find this so called “wire stretcher”! It just didn’t make sense that my co-workers were adamant it was in the truck, but no such tool was appearing before me. After spending 20 minutes or so searching the entire van, one of my coworkers called my cell phone and asked where I was. I explained the situation and he kept throwing hints my way. It wasn’t until I heard snickering in the background, and a follow-up question describing this tool’s “appearance”.

“It’s in there… it’s a purple wire stretcher with pink polka dots”

Seriously? I fell right into the trap. The prank of a lifetime, and to top it all off, I legitimately thought such a tool existed. I was hamulated it front of so many employees/contractors.

Fast forward to August of 2014. I was ready to leave and finish out my last year. The daily reminder of my gullibility forced a wedge between me and my coworkers at the time. It wasn’t until my last day on the job that I realized the teasing was merely because I was liked! I was given a gift on my final day. My team gathered around and watched as I shredded through the wrapping paper. Once I finally opened the package, laughter filled the workroom.

The wire stretcher DID EXIST!

My coworkers found an old barbwire stretcher and spray painted in purple with pink polka dots. It was the best going away gift I could have ever received. It was labeled “Haywire Stretcher” – short for Hayden’s Wire Stretcher. To this day, I still have it hung up in my office as a reminder of that short time I was able to spend with that IT team. My takeway, now 8 years later, is that even though you may be faced with a solution that
